Course Aim/Intended Learning Outcomes:
This MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) enhances knowledge and skills for tackling complex issues such as the evolution of natural ecosystems, processes, ecosystem fragility and resilience, disturbances that can lead to changes in ecosystems, conserve major ecological services and restore natural resources for the long-term sustainability of the production of goods and services by agricultural systems. This will cover; the broader adaptation and development strategies on resilience and transformation; reducing vulnerability of agro ecosystems; sustainable development; ecosystem management; disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation; extreme events and their impacts on ecosystems. Examples of extreme events and their relationship with changing climate will be outlined.
Learners will learn about the design, construction, implementation and monitoring of nature-based solutions for urban ecosystems and the ecological coherence of sustainable cities. Will be able to apply concepts and tools of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR) and ecosystem based adaptation. This module will address conservation and structural mitigation of various hazards as well as climate change adaptation related approaches. In addition, agro-ecological restoration will be included under this module. Sustainable land and water management tools for Eco-DRR and principles of spatial planning and community-based tools for Eco-DRR. “Climate Justice”, which integrates social justice and examines issues such as equality, human rights, collective rights and historical responsibilities for climate change will be also incorporated into this module. Students will be able to adapt to the unexpected change in socio-ecological systems which continue to support human well-being. Students will be able to design own ecosystem-based project for increasing resilience and reducing climate risks.

Course Outline: EN2204 Biogas Technology (2:15 T + 30 P)
Course Description
This course has been designed to provide basic knowledge on biogas technology. The following subtopics will be covered at the end of the course.
Importance of biogas production, biological process involved in anaerobic digestion, suitable raw materials, factors affecting for biogas production, uses of biogas, designing of small biogas digesters, construction of a digester, design parameters of large scale biogas reactors, large scale biogas reactors for electricity generation, uses of digested material etc.
Objective of the Course
The main objective of this course is to deliver knowledge, skill and practical experience on biogas technology.

It helps for effective utilization of limited natural resources in various activities from average regional planning aspects up to global military purposes. It is also an essential tool for emerging smart agriculture based systems today. Therefore, the aim of this course is to provide the students with essential subject matter components in GIS and remote sensing in natural resource management. The core subject themes are included from data acquisition up to various mode of graphical presentations and field operations. The course will also provide the students with hands on experience of data acquisition and handling, mapping, multivariate data handling, aerial photography, and Image analysis, interpretation including a case study: project based on selected theme of Sri Lankan map (disaster risk/ poverty etc.)

Management of agricultural production and processing systems needs controlled levels of inputs to gain utmost benefits. This controlling is only possible if the parameters are measured correctly. However, most of the measuring and quantification methods are destructive. They are neither environmentally friendly no destruction free. In contrary there are possible non-destructive testing methods. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a multivariate data investigation technique that uses the near-infrared region (800 - 2,500nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum. NIRS, is an instrument based technology that does not depend on destructive chemical analytical procedures, is now being used successfully in many agricultural and manufacturing industries worldwide due to its flexibility and reliability in determine quality parameters for biological materials.
As such, this course module will provide the undergraduates a sound knowledge on basics about non-destructive testing and a deep theoretical and practical knowledge about NIR spectroscopy as a non-destructive techniques to be used in agricultural based systems.

The course “Wetland resources management” is
designed to make students aware about the importance of wetlands resources,
understand wetland soils and environment, and comprehend on their conservation
and management. The course is developed for students to identify specific
features of wetland soils and other important components, related to different
types of wetlands; different adaptations exist in wetlands; how wetland soils
differ from other soil types; and the importance of wetlands and wetland soils
in nature; conservation and management strategies; fundamental concepts of
wetland restoration.

Soil is a unique and fascinating part of our planet. It's the only place on Earth where the hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), lithosphere (rock), and biosphere (life) all come together. More than just dirt, soil is a living system that supports crucial environmental processes, making life on land possible.
One of the most exciting areas in modern soil science is soil biodiversity. In fact, the revised World Soil Charter (FAO, 2015) highlights how vital this is for our future. Yet, despite its importance, soil biology—especially the role of soil animals—remains one of the least understood aspects of the soil.
This course will dive into the hidden world of soil creatures, exploring their incredible diversity, how they contribute to essential soil processes, and how they interact with other species and the environment. You’ll also learn how their populations change over time and how human activities and environmental factors influence them.

Agriculture is one of the biggest land users and land-use management is one of the key areas in maintaining sustainability in a
resource-limiting environment. SDG 12 and 15 directly address land-use
management while most of the other SDGs address it at varying levels. This course gives the students the basics of land suitability evaluation mainly from an agriculture perspective.
