As such, aim of this course is to provide the students with wider understanding of sustainable management stance of Sri Lankans i.e. historical records of biodiversity conservation, ingenuity of water managements, tools of building construction and heritage managements that had maintained prosperity of our nation between the generations. The cause will enable the students to critically analyze, the sustainable system strategies before the colonial era and the causes of system collapsed during the post-colonial period, especially during the last five decade. The course will facilitate the students to open up green avenues for effective utilization of natural resources when achieving sustainable development goals.

Modern Electronics era started late 1940 and is just past 80 years'
flag. It is still the key driving force for the modern science and technology.
It is a magnificent platform for all modern sophisticated innovations and in
various applied sciences. So does in the field of agriculture as well. With the
emerging trend of smart farming technology concepts, there are various systems
for sensor embedded electronics to play a vital role in agriculture. Electronic
based systems accumulate large amount of data on soil, crop and weather status while
controlling and managing fertigation, weeding, watering, pruning, harvesting
and various other practices. They are
vital in controlling systems employed in indoor plant houses for controlling
Temperature, RH, light pH and EC in artificial intensive cultivation systems. This Optional course is for final year students who are seeking essential knowledge to
work in hardware components of all above mentioned electronic applications in the
field of Agriculture.

Energy is one of the key factors in all living systems today where every
possible effort to maximize the efficiency of use is vital and appreciable.
Properly designed installed electrical wiring as well as correctly selected and
sized air conditioning systems can significantly contribute to the saving of energy
as well as the initial cost. For instance, In a building, the whole load of the installation doesn’t use at the same
time. In other words, we do not use all the loads at once at home
i.e., we do not switch on all the fans, light points, all air conditioners, TV,
fridge, water heaters, electric iron etc.
at once. Therefore, the designer should keep this in mind (diversity factor)
while selecting the proper and most suitable size of cable for electrical
wiring installation. Similarly, Selection
of worst possible conditions in sizing air conditioning system may lead
excessively large heating or cooling equipment but such conditions prevails
only very few hours. Therefore suitable scientific principles for sizing an Air
Conditioning system is necessary. Appropriate selection will also bring easy
operation conducive environment for the residence and special ambient needs
demand for industrial working environments as well. As such, this optional course will provide the third year students with the essential knowledge
and practical skills to perform a building wiring and air conditioning system
from the initial planning stage up to completion of the installation.

Soil is a unique and fascinating part of our planet. It's the only place on Earth where the hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), lithosphere (rock), and biosphere (life) all come together. More than just dirt, soil is a living system that supports crucial environmental processes, making life on land possible.
One of the most exciting areas in modern soil science is soil biodiversity. In fact, the revised World Soil Charter (FAO, 2015) highlights how vital this is for our future. Yet, despite its importance, soil biology—especially the role of soil animals—remains one of the least understood aspects of the soil.
This course will dive into the hidden world of soil creatures, exploring their incredible diversity, how they contribute to essential soil processes, and how they interact with other species and the environment. You’ll also learn how their populations change over time and how human activities and environmental factors influence them.
Have a look at these videos to get an idea about the subject. I have a lot of interesting stuff ready for you to do in the field and the class this semester. If the videos do not appear on your browser, copy these links and play on YouTube.
